Sermon Notes:

Romans 5:7 "When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners."

2 Timothy 2:24 "A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people."

Dealing with Difficult People

– Edmund, Lucy, Caspian, Reepicheep, and the entire crew of the Dawn Treader have to put up with Eustace. He’s “that” kid who is obnoxious, knows it all, disdains others, and generally makes life miserable for everyone. You know the type. He’s the guy who inserts himself into every conversation in an attempt to prove that he’s smarter than everyone else. She’s the one who complains about every imagined slight that she experiences.

Am I difficult?

Is it easier to hug a porcupine than be in a relationship with me?

Have Others Said Of You . . .

T or F    1. You're a perfectionist!
T or F    2. You're a controlling person!
T or F    3. You're a highly critical person.
T or F    4. No one is ever good enough for you!
T or F    5. You hold a grudge a long time.
T or F    6. You are stingy with compliments.
T or F    7. You're often blaming others.
T or F    8. You're impossible to please!
T or F    9. You withhold love as a punishment.
T or F    10. You can seldom give a compliment without a "but…" following.
T or F    11. You are judgmental.
T or F    12. You are easily offended.
T or F    13. You often contradict others.
T or F    14. You frequently complain about what isn't being done.
T or F    15. You frequently interrupt and correct others.
T or F    16. You’re good at telling and/or knowing what others "should, need, and ought" to do.
T or F    17. You are mad, upset, or angry much of the time.
T or F    18. You react to others not doing what you want them to do by yelling, screaming, swearing, name calling or withdrawing in silence.
T or F    19. You make threats of quitting, divorce, abandonment or withdrawal.
T or F    20. You are rude, insensitive, curt, abrupt, and do not respect the opinions of others.
T or F    21. You see yourself as more hard working, or more responsible, or more capable, or more intelligent than others.

0 - 3         Normal, but not necessarily healthy
4 - 7         Critical and hard to live with
8 - 12       Highly critical and non-accepting of others
13 - 16     Definitely toxic and dangerous to your relationships
17 – 19    A probable history of rocky relationships
20 -- 21    Might think about moving to a deserted island if you are unwilling to change

Do I deal with difficult people in a way that empowers destiny-theirs and mine? “Each person is responsible for his or her own behavior regardless of the actions of others. We cannot always choose the circumstances, but we can always choose our response.”

Let go of the need to change them, to be right and make them wrong, to control, to be heard, acknowledged, the should and shouldn’t, to fix them or change them, as well as the expectation of how things need to be, etc.

Whatever you are reacting to in them is an opportunity for you to transform in yourself.

To be a loving person is a goal, to be loved in return is a wish. Focus on goals, things for which you are responsible, not wishes.  (again, vision, not need, is what moves God.  “I need to be loved” vs “I will be a lover of others”)

Hugging a porcupine must be done very gently, using wisdom.  Even then you will probably walk away with some pain.  (example:  scars on my arm from my own cat—messing with him when he was being difficult)

3 Ways to Hug a Porcupine:

Redemption – Eustace got himself into a situation that he couldn’t get himself out of. He dabbled in what he shouldn’t have, and discovered to his dismay that he had become outwardly what he was inwardly. While in the form of a dragon, Eustace began to learn the value of friendship, and even experienced the joy of cooperation. He learned the satisfaction that comes from helping others. When he finally saw himself as he really was, he discovered that he needed the transformation that only Aslan could provide. The account of that transformation in the book is exquisite. The redemption of Eustace had a real effect on not only Eustace, but on the others too.

1. Pray for insight and wisdom.

When you pray for someone, God often changes your heart about them. Maybe you’ll never see eye to eye with them, that’s ok. The most important thing is that you begin to see them through the eyes of Christ. Ask God to help you see them the way that he sees them. While you’re at it, ask him to protect and bless them and to show you ways to reach out to them.

Psalm 73:12-17 (if the destiny of the wicked, if all that seems unfair, is revealed in the sanctuary of the Lord, then the destiny of the righteous and those pursuing God is also found there.  Enoch and Noah: an uncontaminated bloodline because of surrender to God.)
12 This is what the wicked are like—always free of care, they go on amassing wealth. 13 Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence. 14 All day long I have been afflicted,  and every morning brings new punishments. 15 If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children. 16 When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply
17 till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.

2. Put on the right equipment and get in the right position

James 1:19 “Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.”

Matthew 7:6 “Don’t waste what is holy on people who are unholy.[a] Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack you.

Put on some thick gloves and a flak jacket.  Remember, we are difficult because we have not embraced the nature of God in whose image we are made.  Instead, we are embracing another nature.  (Example:  the story of the ‘pet’ Boa Constrictor in Florida who killed the young couple’s baby—It was his nature.)  Respect the nature you are dealing with while you display the nature of God.   Set realistic expectations and keep your eyes on Jesus, not the porcupine.
Respect is ours to give.  Don’t require it to be earned, just give it away.  I’ve learned that saying, “Please” and “Thank you” is an easy and powerful way to show someone else respect. In fact, it can help build your respect. We’ve forgotten those powerful words, yet they can really dismantle a hard-to-reach person.

3. Refuse to give in to the negative.

Galatians 5:14-15 “For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you are always biting and devouring one another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another.”  Not killing, not stealing, etc., are easy compared to loving each other.  This is the hardest to fulfill and cannot be achieved by self-effort.  We must have the help of God.  Otherwise we turn to vengeance, gossip, despising, and giving up.

Sermon Notes:

The Chronicles of Narnia—Prince Caspian

This Great Adventure: Staying ‘childlike’ in a grown-up world. Staying amazed by Christianity instead of becoming bored and earthly minded. Seeing the greatness of God’s plan and work in our lives.

C. S. Lewis used a literary technique known as defamiliarizing

Defamiliarizing –To present an unfamiliar artistic form that stimulates fresh perception.

Matthew 18:4(KJV) Whosoever shall humble himself as a little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Luke 18:17  (MSG)  Unless you accept God’s Kingdom in the simplicity of a child, you will never get in.
1.  Believe like a child
2.  Receive like a child
3.  Have faith like a child

-----------------

The movie starts with Prince Caspian’s uncle trying to kill him and take the throne. Prince Caspian escapes finding himself in danger and blows the special Rams horn that summons the Kings and Queens of old.

Scene1:
==============

Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy return to Narnia, but find everything has changed since they left.

Romans 8:18-21( MSG )—That’s why I don’t think there is any comparison between the present hard times and the coming good times. The created world itself can hardly wait for what’s coming next. Everything in creation is being more or less held back. God reins it in until both creation and all the creatures are ready and can be released at the same moment in the glorious times ahead. Meanwhile, the joyful anticipation deepens.

How do we change?

We change the way we think.

Romans 12:2( MSG) – Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

2 Peter 2:7-8( KJV) – and delivered Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul form day to day with their unlawful deeds)
Today: killing, perversion, porn, movies, TV, Games etc.

Hardness of heart—(Unbelief)

Matthew 13: 15( MSG) – The people are blockheads! They stick their fingers in their ears so they won’t have to listen; They screw their eyes shut so they won’t have to look, so they won’t have to deal with me face-to-face and let me heal them.

How did Jesus deal with Hardness of heart and unbelief?

Mark 6:4-6(KJV) A prophet is not without honor, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. And he could there do no mighty works, save he laid his hands upon a few sick fold, and healed them. And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages teaching.

Scene 2:
==========

They fought one battle on their own and had great loss. Their next battle the enemy came to them. They sent Lucy to find Aslan, realizing their need for His help.

What can I do to correct my unbelief and hardness of heart?
1.  Repent for not staying childlike in my faith.
2.  Daily look to the Word of God and worship.
3.  Open our eyes again Lord to the Majesty of Your plan and Your works.

Revelation 22:16-17 (MSG) “I Jesus, sent my Angel to testify to these things for the churches. I’m the Root and Branch of David, the Bright Morning Star.” “Come!” Say the Spirit and the Bride. Whoever hears, “Come!” Is anyone thirsty? Come! All who will, come and drink, Drink freely of the Water of Life!

Reel Life- The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Big Idea: We are made in God’s image and will never find fulfillment in anything but His presence, His Kingdom, and His will.

Facts on Lewis and novel:
-   Almost wasn’t published due to criticism of overt Christian allegory and violence
-   Idea came from a picture of the faun he remembered seeing as a boy
-   Lewis began the book during WWII while hosting 3 young girls sent from London to escape the blitz bombings.
-   Aslan is an allegory of the substitution and the ransom work of Christ
-   Time magazine lists the book as one of the 100 most important English works

Intro:
-   We all have an instinctive desire to be fulfilled, to have purpose and find significance
-   We are all faced with the same question- will we be what God created to be or will we spend our lives searching for fulfillment in other places?

In the beginning:

Genesis 1:26-27
New Living Translation (NLT)
26 Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.”27 So God created human beings in his own image.
In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

Genesis 3:1-4
3 The serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the Lord God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?” 2 “Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,” the woman replied. 3 “It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.’” 4 “You won’t die!” the serpent replied to the woman. 5 “God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.”

-   God clearly laid out our purpose in the beginning
-   We are all faced with the question, “Did God really say?”
-   Warning! The serpent challenged Eve’s purpose! It should send up a red flag anytime the enemy is telling you what God said.

Edmund, Eve and all of Humanity:

Scene 1:

Edmund returns to the White Witch’s castle thinking he would be welcomed. He sits on the witch’s throne trying it out for size and we see his desire for Turkish Delight turn to hunger for power. He learns of the witch’s real intentions and realizes that his choices might have cost him everyone he loves.

*See the “Big Picture”

-   Live for the eternity instead of only for the moment. We serve an eternal purpose
-   Sin is never about sin, it’s about purpose (Turkish Delight)
-   When we are selfish our world shrinks; when we serve others our world expands
-   Outside of a loving God and serving others there is no purpose

Colossians 3:1-3
New Living Translation (NLT)
3 Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. 3 For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God.

Colossians 3:1-3
The Message (MSG)
1-2 So if you're serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ—that's where the action is. See things from his perspective.

*Protect your Purpose

Colossians 1:15-23
Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.
He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,16 for through him God created everything
in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see
and the things we can’t see—
such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.17 He existed before anything else,
and he holds all creation together.18 Christ is also the head of the church,
    which is his body.
He is the beginning,
supreme over all who rise from the dead.  So he is first in everything.19 For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, 20 and through him God reconciled
    everything to himself.
He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.21 This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. 22 Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault. 23 But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News.

Galatians 1:6-7 (SOAP Verse)
I am shocked that you are turning away so soon from God, who called you to himself through the loving mercy of Christ. You are following a different way that pretends to be the Good News 7 but is not the Good News at all. You are being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth concerning Christ.

-   Distracted by the idea of the “perfect call”
-   Knowing God’s will is result of a lifestyle of worship
-   Know his presence and you will know His will
-   If you are ever uncertain of His will be certain of His presence

Romans 12:1-2
New Living Translation (NLT)
And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.

-   We, like Edmund, get tricked into thinking we must attain our place with God when it has already been provided. God already has the plan and we are the original plan
-   This was also the way the serpent deceived Eve. She was already made in God’s image.

Psalms 139:15-16
You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion,
as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. 16 You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out
before a single day had passed.

*Stay Humble

-   Avoid the Blame Game: Edmund blamed, Adam blamed and we blame
-   The redeeming work of the cross begins in our lives when we take responsibility for the state we are in.
-   He is more than able if we are more than willing

Ex. David “I am the man”

2 Samuel 12:13
Then David confessed to Nathan, “I have sinned against the LORD.” Nathan replied, “Yes, but the LORD has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin.

Scene 2:

In this scene we see Aslan crown the four children as kings and queens of Narnia. They each take their rightful place on the throne to rule and reign.

Psalm 8:4-6
“what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Yet you made them only a little lower than God and crowned them with glory and honor. You gave them charge of everything you made, putting all things under their authority”

We are created in the image of God. We have been a part of his plan from the beginning. Real fulfillment only comes from living in His presence and allowing His presence to live through us- loving God and loving others. We were made for this!

Vision Sunday 7-1

Big Idea: Taking ownership of our “home” and making sure everyone gets “3 touches”.

Intro:
-   The family and the church are the two institutions God established.
-   They are the vehicles for life transformation
-   The local church is a family and this is our “home”

 Ephesians 3:8-10
And so here I am, preaching and writing about things that are way over my head, the inexhaustible riches and generosity of Christ. My task is to bring out in the open and make plain what God, who created all this in the first place, has been doing in secret and behind the scenes all along. Through followers of Jesus like yourselves gathered in churches, this extraordinary plan of God is becoming known and talked about even among the angels!

“A regional church sharing the life-giving message of Jesus with West Georgia and the world”

Ephesians 4:16

He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.

Illus. Cruise Ship verses Battleship

"My church must be a battleship, not a cruise liner. If you are to pierce the darkness and rescue souls lost on the scratch, you cannot be a ship of spectators. Everyone must know why they are on board."

Wayne Cordeiro. Doing Church As A Team

-   Every member a minister
-   It’s not one person doing 100 things, it’s 100 people doing one thing

Ephesians 4:11-12
New Living Translation (NLT)
11 Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. 12 Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.

"equipping" (katartismos) - comes from the verb” to mend”

-   The same verb is used n Mark 1:19 when James and John were in the boat mending their nets The torn nets may have gotten snagged on the rocky bottom of the Sea of Galilee, so these fishermen mended them prior to their next fishing trip.
-   They were equipping the nets to fulfill the purpose for which they had been created: to catch fish!
Illus. My dad and sports equipment
-   In the same way we are mended/equipped by hearing the Word and being connected to the local church.
-   Our purpose isn’t fulfilled by sitting on the “shelf” but rather being thrown into the sea.

1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 (NKJV)
11 as you know how we exhorted, and comforted, and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children, 12 that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.

So What?

People can experience the love of Jesus through “3 touches” whether in our homes, businesses, or churches.  All three flow from a heart that is others- focused.

3 Touches:

1.   Exhort (Build Them Up):
   -   Encourage and cheer others on.  This is accomplished with a warm, sincere, friendly greeting.
   -   Always strive to be ‘people-focused’, not ‘task-focused.
   -   Jesus wants to meet people through you.  He wants to cheer them on through you.  He wants to move them closer to a life-changing moment through you.

Exhorting Tips:
-   Smile and make eye contact.

2.   Comfort (Lift Them Up):
   -   Come alongside others and walk in their shoes, hear them.
   -   This requires a deeper level of connection.
   -   Being sensitive to others begins with being sensitive to the Holy Spirit
   -   What are they saying with theirs words, their body language, their actions.  Are they nervous, awkward, confused, mad, hurt?
   -   God has brought them across your path on purpose.  Expect God to speak to you concerning people.  Move from greeting them to loving them.

Comforting Tips:
-   Comforting begins giving them your name, then hearing their name.  Sociologists tell us the most pleasant sound people can hear is their name spoken in a friendly manner.
-   Call them by name.  Assure them, compliment them, even pray with them if you sense the Holy Spirit’s direction to do so.  Go beyond a wave and a smile.

3.   Charge (Fire Them Up)
-   The word is ‘edify’, not a word we use much.  The best definition is a word picture—connecting a dead car battery to a live one to jump it off.  We are the live battery! Raise the level of expectation with this touch.

Charging Tips:
-   Be  excited. Meet people where they are and lead to expect God’s best.
